On November 15, 1983, sheriff’s deputies in San Luis Obispo County, California, responded to what looked like a low-speed car accident on a dirt road just off Highway 1 near the beach. A 1980 Chevy camper van sat halfway off the road with a damaged fender, a bent hood, and shattered passenger windows. There was blood by the driver’s seat, but both front seats were empty.
