John Kavanagh The Gravediggers in Dublin is perhaps the most classic Irish Pub in the world.
Since 1833, for the last eight generations, the Kavanagh family has been serving cold pints of Guinness to their patrons. Many say this is the place to get the best pint of Guinness in Dublin, and that’s saying something.
The pub is called The Gravediggers because they share a wall with the Glasnevin cemetery, where more than 1.5 million Dubliners lay to rest. Back in the day, the older generations of Kavanaghs would sell their beer to the Gravediggers through the boundary fence.
These days, Ciaran Kavanagh, along with his wife, his sister and other family, are all keeping the family tradition alive and well.
Their addition: a menu of tapas inspired by Irish food. Now, customers can visit The Gravediggers not just for a pint of Guinness, but for traditional coddle, beef stew, crispy mac and cheese, and a variety of other fare.

In business..nine generations of one family continuously is a feat in itself & usually there’s three generations working side by side each day

Go here as often as I can when on the Northside! Guinness is class. To the tourists, the pub is brilliant and well worth a visit when you are here. Please try the Irish spring rolls, Ciaran is doing serious work in the kitchen. I’ll be going for a pint here on Tuesday when work is done.

Christ, yer one that married into the place wasn’t short of an opinion! The woman that actually grew up there barely got a word in!

I had lunch there in April. They serve some fine gastropub fare. The Coddle was great, the jalapeΓ±o mac n cheese was fantastic as well. The Guinness was delicious.

An amazing pub with the best Guinness I ever tasted. Was there in June, and I can’t wait to go back to try the food and drink more of the best Guinness in Ireland.

Lovely place, have a few pints, have those delicious chili prawns they do, head out into the graveyard a bit pissed and have a little cry at Brendan Behan’s grave, a perfect day

Don’t ever rub grass or anything on a headstone ever. Don’t deface them. If you want to read one there are techniques that leave no trace. 7:14

Turns out that “The more money you had, the closer you got to God” is utter bullshit, as exemplified by this beautiful story.

Very badly disguised Guiness ad, but I would go to that place nonetheless. Looks cozy and has a nice story. I don’t know if the custom of leaving one pint for the dead is true or not, but is good anecdote to tell and sounds very Irish.
