On Christmas Day,1974, the eye of Cyclone Tracy ripped through Darwin, leaving the city in ruins. Over 100 people were killed, 20 000 were left homeless, and 80 percent of the city’s buildings were destroyed. It was the worst natural disaster in Australian history. This highly acclaimed, three part mini-series depicts the events of that terrifying Christmas, celebrating the spirit and courage of the people who survived the devastation. Caught in the excitement of a hot Australian Christmas, many locals failed to heed early warnings and were left helpless in the face of the cyclone’s fury. But others fought back. Tracy Mann (Cowra Breakout) stars as Connie, the battling single mum who thought she had nothing more to fight. Chris Haywood (Newsfront) is Steve, a man defeated in life but who finds reason to live again after the cyclone and Nicholas Hammond (TV’s Spiderman) is a conman brought back to earth after the disaster. I was 8 years old in December 1974. I went through cyclone Tracey . It’s not ever left me. I can close my eyes now and hear the howling wind.

That was typical of the attitude then, Tracy sure changed that though but there’s still very much “cyclone party” when a cyclones coming even to this day, still taken more seriously though.

I was only 8yo when this happened, an awful tragedy that affected many & touched a lot of Australians😢 I was a bit too young to understand the gravity of what happened, but I do remember a song:
“Santa never made it into Darwin, a big wind came & blew the town away”😢❤🦘 Quality movie 👍

Cyclone Marcus would have hit us just as bad if they never bought in the cyclone coding for every building! Ludmilla, Stuart Park & Darwin city were all hit the worst from what I saw after cyclone marcus! So im glad i wasnt born yet when tracy hit us!💔😩🇦🇺👍
I was 3 yrs old when Tracy hit, I was there in 1974, although I was only 3 yrs old I can still remember the wind, watching this movie again, I quite literally got chills watching it, I would like to return to Darwin to see how it looks today, but I don’t think I would, watching this movie, brought back some memories of that night.

Enjoyed watching this. So sad for those that lost loved ones and homes. Very resilient people who stayed to rebuild. ❤
The other heartbreaking thing was when all the dogs were shot and killed on site by police then apparently thrown into a pit behind a school because they were apparently concerned about potential disease ect, dogs were also taken from people even children who tried to take their dogs with them while evacuating only to end up being shot.
Thank god things have changed in that regard

What your not told is just after the cyclone local people in Darwin were forced at gun point by local police and the army to Clean up, 200 people were reported missing, they were either shot trying to escape or shot dead for looting

I was working on a station out back s.a. and will never forget the stream of cars heading south when i got onto the main highway ,when i got to port augusta i found about the cyclone

I was too young to know at the time, but I remember a folk duo called Bill and Boyd who released a single “Santa never made it into Darwin” which I think raised funds for the recovery. For some reason I still know most of the words.

I still remember the news stories on Christmas day, and remember mentioning to my parents is there really a God to let this happen on all days but Christmas Day ??
