The New York Times has obtained footage of the 2022 death of Michael Nieves, a mentally ill detainee on Rikers Island who cut his throat and bled out as officers stood by for 10 minutes. The Nieves case is one of the incidents that ultimately led a federal judge to strip control of the jail from the City of New York in May 2025.
The Times obtained the videos after three years of Freedom of Information requests and lawsuits as part of an effort to report on conditions inside the notorious jail. Some of the videos were partially blurred when they were provided.

His body his choice is what most of you liberals preach. If only you had this type of concern for a young female at an abortion clinic taking someones elses life.
I’m low key impressed how long he was conscious, given that you literaly can here the life-juice dripping on the floor… and that officer just stand in the doorway and watch him bleed out?! like wth, maybe go and grab some popcorn and a comfy chair so that you dont have to stand… i cant believe that no one came on the (pretty simple) idea of at least wrap a blanket or something around his neck, just tight enough for the bleeding to slow down and not hinder his breathing…
the integrity of a nation can be judged by how it treats its prisoners
There’s only so much that can be done about severely mentally ill people. Suing the state in this case is not justified. Had Nieves been at home, his family would not have been able to take care of him, so the lawsuit is just an opportunistic cash grab
It also looks like burnout. the inaction is definitely an aspect of burnout is it not?
