Inside Rikers Island: A Suicide Attempt as Guards Stand By | Visual Investigations 0 (0)

The New York Times has obtained footage of the 2022 death of Michael Nieves, a mentally ill detainee on Rikers Island who cut his throat and bled out as officers stood by for 10 minutes. The Nieves case is one of the incidents that ultimately led a federal judge to strip control of the jail from the City of New York in May 2025.
