Live music is booming, and CAA’s top touring execs explain exactly how today’s biggest shows come to life. Managing director, Rob Light, and co-head of global touring, Rick Roskin, join host Kristin Robinson to unpack the rise of live music’s modern era. They dive into the post-pandemic concert boom, how agents build tours from the ground up and what it takes for an artist to grow from a club act to a headliner. Light and Roskin discuss the balance between fair ticket pricing and fan demand and how agents fight to keep more money with the artists. They share how gut instinct still plays a role in spotting future stars, how massive shows like Harry Styles’ 15-night Madison Square Garden run come together and the evolving impact of festivals and social media on touring. Plus, they reveal the wildest artist requests, unforgettable live moments, and their take on concert etiquette in the age of the live music boom.

This podcast has been excellent so far. Loving the “inside baseball” conversations. I’m just starting out as a live performer and am hoping to grow, and I’ve been getting some really good insight on certain things that I wasn’t expecting to get without being in the industry for a while.

Dynamic pricing does not mean that all the money goes to the artist, unless the artist sells the tickets himself via a fan-shop. For instance I have noticed that Jesse Welles ticket prices for his upcoming European tour can vary from 550 Euros (in England, where he is very popular) to 19 Euros in countries where his following is small. If the fans travel to the shows in other countries there will be higher demand, leading to higher prices. But then the artist will turn his fans into competitors who will increase the demand for tickets and raise the prices. There will be no community of fans. The artists will squeeze as much money out of his fan-following as possible leaving their fans as the fools who have to pay for it all. In the end the artist will have less fans. I guess there is no (other) business like show business.
