U.S. President Donald Trump takes an extremely hard line against damage to and vandalism of national monuments and statues (“Protecting America’s Monuments from Vandalism”). He primarily cites existing federal laws, which he enforces to the fullest extent by executive order. If you let that sink in for a moment, DJT is the biggest vandal in town—for example, the demolition of the East Wing (White House), the Reflecting Pool, the Kennedy Center, and the threat to cast Arlington in the shadow of a 250-foot-tall Trump Arch. And perhaps some of you remember the legendary Bonwit Teller building on Fifth Avenue. In June 1980, he had the two Art Deco sculptures by René Paul Chambellan destroyed with a jackhammer after the Met expressed interest in them. This was New York architectural history in its purest form. Or consider the sculpture “Blue” by artist Joel Shapiro, which he had removed from in front of the Kennedy Center. Donald has no grasp of the concept of artistic freedom. He is, therefore, a true vandal—and an aesthetic vandal as well.
