We got an inside look at what it’s like on the first day for new plebes at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.
287 plebe candidates arrived on campus for the beginning of “indoctrination,” a 16-day period full of intense mental and physical tests.
During our visit, we saw plebe candidates getting their heads shaved, learning proper movements and responses, and enduring an event known as “the Grinder,” where their instructional cadre commands and corrects them with loud intensity.
After an emotional farewell to their families, the plebe candidates take their first steps toward becoming licensed officers in the US Merchant Marine.
Most graduates go on to work as licensed officers aboard commercial and government ships, either navigating and managing the vessel or operating its engines and machinery. But during wartime, these civilian mariners can become a critical part of the military supply chain, operating ships that carry weapons, vehicles, fuel, ammunition, and other supplies to US forces overseas.

Hahahhahahahahahhaah. I’ve been yelled at since I was two years old and that’s par for the course and all it ever made me do was rebel. Hell, I got yelled at by a judge once and I intellectually kicked his ass in court by winning a case by taking away the power of his gavel by meeting the legal standards required by law to win a case knowing he would be shamed for his behavior if I so much as tried to appeal.
So yeah, yelling at someone doesn’t do SH*T. Demoting them DOES.

have you ever heard of ROTC? or Enlisting? There’s a million ways for entering military service. This is one of the 5 Federal Service Academies for each of the branches 🙂

As an Army vet, I’m well aware of how the military works. My point is that the Merchant Marine academy has nowhere near the cachet of West Point, Annapolis, or the Air Force Academy. BTW, there’s technically not a million ways to join the military.

Why USMMA? No tuition, rigorous academics, and 300+ days of real world experience working aboard ships as a midshipman—an opportunity neither USNA nor MIT offers. Graduates can commission into any branch on active duty or in the reserves, or earn well over six figures sailing commercially while serving in the reserves.

It’s crazy that all your life you’ve been told to look someone in their eyes when they are speaking or you’re speaking to them, and then you go to the military and you can’t look your superior in the eye while they are yelling at you.
Why do Americans find this intimidating? I would just find it funny, they’re acting like children.
Being insulted and yelled at by kids. It’s like being a parent.
