USA Today published an opinion piece saying you’re wrong if you think having a gun at home makes you safer.
So let’s actually look at the argument.
The article uses a real family tragedy to make a broader claim about gun ownership, suicide, defensive gun use, and home safety. But when you break down the numbers, the framing starts falling apart fast.
They talk about gun deaths without clearly separating suicides, homicides, and accidents.
They claim defensive gun use is rare, but the study they linked still found tens of thousands of defensive gun uses per year — and that’s on the low end.
They use the “1%” statistic by burying defensive gun uses inside every type of crime in America, including things like fraud, shoplifting, and stolen property.
That’s not clarity.
That’s statistical sleight of hand.
Here’s the truth: a gun sitting in a drawer doesn’t magically make you safe. But a gun, plus training, responsibility, safe storage, and the will to use it when your life depends on it, absolutely makes you more capable of protecting yourself and your family.
The anti-gun argument only works when it keeps you afraid and keeps the numbers blurred together.

The family was perfectly safe. If they weren’t then it would’ve been a murder/suicide instead of just a suicide.

Personally, having a gun in my home makes me feel like an American! Our founding fathers wrote the second amendment into the constitution for a reason. It’s very sad that these politicians want to strip us of our gun rights and guns too. Democrats need to understand one thing, do they know why the mainland United States has never been invaded… no foreign soldier has ever stepped foot on mainland United States…. Because they know they can never occupy this country for the simple fact we have the largest population of civilians with firearms than any other country in the world so not only do you have to take on the military but now you have to take on the civilian population, armed with weapons. So let’s go ahead turn in all our guns then World War III will be right around the corner because I’m pretty sure there’ll be a lot of countries lining up to invade us.
