Here’s an excerpt from The World of People, a short-lived newsmagazine-type show syndicated across the country and aired in Los Angeles, CA on KABC Channel 7, that earlier in 1980 had replaced that station’s version of The 3:30 Movie (KABC was the first of the five ABC O&O’s to abandon afternoon movies – followed in that order by the stations in New York [WABC, 1981], Detroit [WXYZ, 1982], Chicago [WLS, 1984] and finally, in 1986, San Francisco [KGO]). In this segment, a male strip show involving an individual named Man of the Year by Playgirl magazine is spotlighted.

(A side note: Apparently this show was far too close for Group W’s comfort to its own Evening / PM Magazine franchise, and litigation on their part, plus the high costs of doing the show, would contribute to its ultimate demise.)

Includes:

Station ID / promo for Eyewitness News at 4pm with Jerry Dunphy and Tawny Little (voiceover by ??)

“Joined in progress” notice (voiceover by ??; most likely an ABC News special report on the Iran-Iraq war aired aforehand)

We “join in progress” a look at a male strip show, with a building contractor named Bill Davidson (Playgirl’s Man of the Year for 1980) being interviewed by Jan d’Atri, and speaking about how he got into it (the owner of the house he was working on); plus video of him stripping down to his skivvies before a live audience (of which he himself said he was a newcomer). (Randy Newman’s song “Pants” had to be degraded in sound quality to avoid YouTube blocking)

This aired on local Los Angeles TV on Wednesday, September 24th 1980 within the 3:30pm to 4:00pm timeframe.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: tapes@fuzzy.tv Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives – the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to digital, please e-mail tapes@fuzzy.tv Thank you for your help!

Defying description, Real People went on to become a huge hit for NBC during its five years, giving rise to many imitators and eventually creating the genre, reality television…brought to you by SloppBoxx.Com.

I thought back then, almost everything was as censored as it was 15 years earlier. I mean from what I was told, by many of those whom were around back then. I mean in the 1980s I remember cartoons at that hour. Not anything titled playgirl or any other sugar coded references to women as permiscous which can easily be defended, by calling a man a prostitute for getting paid to be a part of that. I mean no I don’t agree with that, either. But in life that is how one will receive what they give . Hey it is what it is.

For what it’s worth, this is the type of show that would air on a Saturday evening during the “dinner/family hour”, ie, just before the prime time schedule started.

I probably never seen this because I live i Chiago. For some I got a notification about even though before I was only getting some for stations in my area and some for networks such as ABC. I assumed it was about the Musuem Of Broadcast Communications in Chicago because it has recordings from those stations.

Women crack me up. They’re so well-behaved until some stud walks into the room and starts taking off his clothes and then they go crazy like wild animals.🤣
