A newly-developed computer called WOTAN hypnotises a number of people and starts building an army of machines with which to take over the world. Can the Doctor alert the authorities to the danger in time? Or will his message fall on deaf ears?

The intro to this is forever cool. Poor Dodo. Much as I love Ben and Polly, she deserved a proper exit. Then the same thing happens to them…

That opening scene is one of the best 60s TARDIS landings I reckon
The 1st Doctor really stands out among the Classic Doctors, since he seemed to be one of the few Doctors who had a character arc. The scene at 1:10:50 is the perfect culmination to the Doctor’s arc of going from a grouchy old man stumbling around the universe to accepting his responsibility as a force against evil. All thanks to the influence from Ian, Barbara, Steven and all his other companions.

Actually, since this story was released exactly 60 years ago, the “over 20s” she’s talking about would now be “over 80s” 😛
I watched these episodes on PBS as a child into young adulthood and I didn’t quite appreciate the talent back then. Watching this episode, it strikes me now just how perfect William Hartnell was for this part of the Doctor’s adventures. As well as the subsequent actors to follow except Colin Baker. I just thought he was a weird choice and never enjoyed the show during his tenure.
