Late to the party, since I waited until 2025 to watch (and fall in love with this series). Commenting just to say, “Shut up, Darren.” Haaaa Just kidding. The ending was bittersweet for me, because I was actually torn between Lies-ah being with Josh or Charles. I do just feel that an age gap over 10 years is not sustainable. 🤷‍♀️

Okay so I’m re watching the show & I’m picking up on so many little things I didn’t before, I’m mad all over again by the ending so I found this on YouTube. Now I have no choice but to vent. Even years later 😅😭

“ The lie cost her, love & she doesn’t get away with it at the end” Na. Darren Star is wrong for that. I thought the entire shows purpose was to show *Ageism* that women go through, that you can’t accomplish certain things because of age & judgements. This should’ve been a lesson for everyone in the show that Yeah, Liza was right, no we wouldn’t have hired her if we knew her real age, we need to change that. Why does it cost her anything? I thought all this time, the show was showing a great point & for the Writer to say, no she lied she didn’t deserve it.. is really backwards & gaslighted the fans into being invested in this story in the first place. And about the love triangle, it is weird that the entire show revolved around the chemistry & budding romance with Charles, only to throw it away, like so why can’t she get the Man & get the Job again? Liza wasn’t some Career hungry monster, she just wanted to get her foot in the door, as most Women that age would, especially after having raise a child.

As for the love triangle. Josh was just the guy that got her spark back after the divorce & moving into her new life, which is still very important cause you need those steps but that’s what he was, he helped open her up. He also ‘fell in love’ with every girl he met, the dude called Clair the love of his life after a week, he wasn’t that in love with Liza, he’s also the one that left her. Charles was there all long, he sacrificed so much & was willing to bet it all on her which is the love Liza deserved. How it ended made no sence to how the character development was, It’s just poor Writing to have an alternative ending.

lol I’m right there with you, just finished, years later. I also thought Charles disclosing the old affair was a way for him to understand he isn’t morally superior to Liza. And, Charles also wanting to run out of the stodgy dinner, I thought was him also clearly signaling that he doesn’t want the stuffy, traditional life. Maybe Josh’s actor got COVID and they couldn’t film more. Or they thought they’d have more episodes in this season to wrap things up. TBH, they didn’t need 7 seasons for this show lmao, but I’m very happy that the icons on this cast and behind the scenes got their paychecks. So given how many episodes they had, there’s really no excuse for Charles’ abrupt weird arc toward tradition/being inflexible (despite him leaving his job to go on a cool residency…) But I guess her talking about Charles’ red flags a few episodes before at least gave us some clues about the ending.

But I guess I do like Liza not necessarily ending up with either guy. It seems she has trouble with monogamy, so I hope she’s poly with Josh and still gets to go out and have fun. Like, it would have been cool to see her on a date talking about her new job, and then Josh walks in and they smile and she turns away and looks equally happy about her date. I wish Liza had gotten accepted to some sort of leadership fellowship in the 6th or 7th season so show her commitment to developing her skills, etc. Incubator was cool, but to me, Kelsey consistently more showed CEO leadership qualities/skill/drive than Liza, who I thought was a solid agent and teammate.

I wonder what really happened with Miriam Shor’s character not getting wrapped up, it was just a COVID thing, etc. She even directed on the show, so it’s just weird we got nothing besides the Zoom call.

PS- It’s annoying that Darren didn’t want to get up and charge his laptop. It says a lot to me and justifies any criticism of lazy writing lol.

I See it exactly like you do. This conversation comforted me a little bit about the ending, but in general I don’t like how they built up the story between Charles and her to finish it 10 minutes later. If she would have chosen her carreer over the two guys in general would have been okay maybe… but not after the love stories were so much in the center of the whole story. Also… many people of team Josh don’t like Charles behavior: I can just say that I understood him and his feelings and fears completely. I am just in the middle of watching it again and pay attention to some things I didn’t noticed before: now I think Liza found Charles interesting because he was her boss and he obviously liked her from the Beginning. I think she used him somehow to get a career. Especially the scene where they sit in the bar before their first night together: she says that she remembered how tall and important he looked when she saw him the first time…. I think this shows where her real focus lies.

I didnt understand the logic for them breaking up 😢 Is Darren referring to the initial lie about her age, or about the fact she kept Yaddo a secret and couldnt say if she would have admitted knowing if Charles hadnt been accepted. I have binge watched this show twice and still gutted at the Charles/Liza closure 😢

It’s revelatory how Liza’s lie kept her daughter in school at Vassar and gave the daughter a roommate that had a strong connection to Charles through the roommate’s parents Bob and Julia… Liza would not have gotten the professional and love life she wanted without that lie…
Her lie was a blessing wrapped in love…

Just binged all 7 seasons, then found this. So enlightening to hear insights from Darren and the actors. I didn’t think I’d enjoy this show, which I assumed would be a superficial rom com. But was hooked from the first episode. Brilliantly sharp writing: the one liners! Depth and humour in the social commentary. And what performances from the entire ensemble! I especially loved Miriam, Debi, Nico and (of course) Molly. They played their characters so well, I believed they were real. And I’m a cynical old bird with an unwilling suspension of disbelief. Loved the feminist ending: she didn’t need a ‘happy ever after’ with a man, as she had herself and her friends. Bravo to all involved, including makeup and wardrobe.

No this ending SUCKED. It didn’t make any sense. Josh is too immature and they hardly have anything in common. She loves the publishing industry and books. He doesn’t even read. Charles just finished saying he would take her anyway. He told his friend he felt free when he was with her. Then because she submitted his book and he decided he can’t be with her because she wouldn’t have told him if he wasn’t accepted into that program. That just doesn’t add up or make any sense at all. I binge watched the entire show on Netflix and I have never been so disappointed. It’s basically put me off series. From now on limited series only. No more investing this much time into another potential dud.

100%. I have never thought I could invest so much emotions and time in a show and it’s characters… because of this I felt just disappointed…still days later. After all we went through with Liza as fans we would have deserved a better, fulfilling ending. Yes, I was team Charles from the beginning because it made more sense and I liked his character with all his love and fears and vulnerability and integrity till the end. But I could have lived with the current ending better if they didn’t had built up Liza-Charles so much or hadn’t especially put the focus more on her love life and the two men than her job. That’s why the ending made no sense at all.

I didn’t like the ending at all. But this program offered me some consolation through Peter and Darren’s perspectives and interpretations.

“Although many viewers assume Liza ends up with Josh, the finale is intentionally open-ended — it shows a reconnection, not a definitive romantic conclusion.”
