In July 1971, 21-year-old Joyce LePage, a student at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, disappeared after spending the evening with friends. The next morning, campus police responded to an unusual report. A large section of green carpet had been cut out of an empty residence hall where no one was supposed to be living. Inside the building, they found Joyce’s purse, textbooks, and personal letters. Joyce was nowhere to be found.

In Part 1 of this two-part Crime Junkie investigation, Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat revisit one of Washington State’s most enduring unsolved murders, a case that has frustrated investigators for more than 50 years and is active once again.

You’ll hear about Joyce LePage’s final known movements on July 22, 1971, the strange discovery inside Stevens Hall at Washington State University, why Joyce had secretly been staying in an empty campus dormitory, the discovery of her abandoned 1966 Dodge Coronet in Pullman, the heartbreaking discovery made nine months later near Wawawai Canyon in Whitman County, Washington, and the first three of six investigative theories that detectives believe still deserve attention today.

This episode also explores Joyce’s life as a chemistry and German student at Washington State University, the confusing timeline surrounding her disappearance, why investigators believe the missing carpet may hold the key to solving the case, and the first two major theories that have survived decades of investigation.
Today, investigators believe someone still knows what happened during the night of July 22, 1971.

Ashley and Britt, can you research the unsolved murders in Henryville, Indiana. A young boy, and two teenage boys. No one seems to care about this, imho.
