Most of the shrimp Americans consume comes from India. But in August 2025, the Trump administration announced 50% tariffs on the country. Shrimp farmers in Gujarat, who’d taken US demand and turned poor towns into valuable shrimp hubs, had to pivot.
In the US, Louisiana shrimpers applauded the tariffs but were split on whether they’d gone as far as they’d hoped. Now the Supreme Court has struck down Trump’s ’emergency tariffs’ but the President says he will still pursue them with an executive order. So, how did tariffs affect Indian shrimp farmers and Gulf fishermen? And who really wins and loses when a trade war hits an industry this global?
Editor’s note: At 6:28, the video incorrectly states that Indian shrimp ‘exporters’ pay the tariff to US customs. It is actually importers who pay it but exporters do ‘indirectly’ shoulder some of the costs.

How did they take over? A tropical climate and slave wages…duh.
The answer is not to tariff but rather build up the US domestic industry then ban all these overseas imports. Remember there is no clean water in these third world countries. It’s all nasty.
Shrimp and fish farmed in southern Asia are most often grown in horribly polluted environments. Sometimes even raw sewage.
Hell nah, ain’t eating shrimp no more from today
So obviously you guys were over fishing to begin with now your complaining because the money back in the day made you greedy for today, next time invest.
Who tf give a damn about the American shrimpers destroying our marine ecosystem 💀, let them go out of business thank god
Yes because the owner makes the money in India the workers get pennies an hour welcome to India 😂 not to mention the cast system India has or Canada now😢
Never really thought about how much goes on behind something as simple as buying shrimp 😂 farming, processing, shipping, importing and then somehow it ends up at the supermarket for one price.
Shrimp is extremely toxic. They only clean habitats once every 7 years and load the water and food with antibiotics.
This is the first time I seen a hygienic Indian factory. 😮
