It’s time to stop the “official” narrative and look at the actual history of the Bronx. Grandmaster Flash is a master of branding, but a lot of what he claims to have “invented” is actually a rebrand of other people’s breakthroughs.

Here is the truth: The Scratch was NOT Flash’s invention. It was discovered by a 13-year-old kid named Grand Wizzard Theodore in 1975. Crucially, the equipment actually lived at Theodore’s house because Flash couldn’t keep it at his own, giving Theodore 24/7 access to innovate while Flash wasn’t around.

The “Headphone” claim is a cover. Flash often claims he was scratching in his headphones first, but that’s a lie—that’s just cueing, a silent move DJs had been doing since the 50s. Theodore was the first to realize that “mistake” was actually a musical instrument and played it out loud for a crowd. Flash didn’t invent the fader. Pro disco mixers already had faders long before him. Flash was just a broke kid at a vocational school who built a DIY switch from radio parts because he couldn’t afford the real gear. He built a cheaper version of existing tech, he didn’t invent the technology itself.

The “Quick Mix Theory” was borrowed. Flash openly admits he learned the “Law of Transition” from disco DJs like Pete DJ Jones. He didn’t invent the concept of looping or transitions; he just applied his “Scientific” branding to it to make it sound like he was the architect of the whole system. The only reason Flash gets the crown in history books is because he was the first to put it on a hit record in 1981. He had the marketing and the record deal, so he “washed” the real history. Theodore is the inventor; Flash is just the guy who put his name on the patent after the fact. Give the crown to the Grand Wizzard.
