In this episode of P³, we react to You Really Got Me by Van Halen—a cover that transforms a classic rock song into something louder, faster, wilder, and unmistakably Van Halen.
As two musicians, we explore:
How Eddie Van Halen turns the guitar into the driving force of the entire song
Why the band’s looseness actually requires incredible precision
The explosive chemistry between rhythm, groove, and showmanship
How Van Halen injects humor, swagger, and danger into the performance
Why this version became iconic in rock history despite being a cover
This is both a reaction and a deeper listening session—focused on guitar language, rhythmic feel, arrangement energy, and how Van Halen reshaped hard rock through personality and musicianship.

That head turning sound, my goodness
No auto tune at that time. It was done straight to tape. Guitar used modified amplifiers, plate reverb and phasor
I heard this first inFord Pinto with a new cassette rado deck by Audiovox…It was way too loud sitting in the back seat

You skipped the best part of the Eruption guitar solo !
Many people vastly underestimate how difficult it is to be the sole melodic instrument in a musical trio- it truly magnifies the high level of musicianship of players like Van Halen, Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Paul Kassoff, etc. The goal is to sound as huge as possible to minimize the perceived gaps that would normally be filled by additional instruments. The vocal harmonies add greatly as well. Michael and Alex also have a huge sound- these guys were truly game changers.
