A brand new study just confirmed what a lot of us have been quietly sensing for a while — the internet is increasingly not written by humans. The Pew Research Center analyzed nearly 490,000 English-language web pages from the Common Crawl archive, spanning the five years between January 2021 and July 2026. What they found is striking. Thirty-five percent of all web pages published since ChatGPT launched in November 2022 show significant signs of AI authorship or heavy AI editing. In July 2026 alone, one in ten of all English web pages including older ones showed AI fingerprints. Filter that to only brand new content and the number jumps to one in three. The pattern is not uniform across the web either. Commercial websites — think product pages, blogs, news aggregators and marketing copy — show AI authorship at ten times the rate of educational or government sites. The study also identified two specific AI writing habits that now appear more frequently in recent web content than at any point before — the em dash, that long horizontal punctuation line, and the Oxford comma. But perhaps the most unsettling question the study raises is one that nobody has a fully satisfying answer to yet. If AI models are learning from internet text, and AI is now writing roughly a third of all new internet text, what happens to the quality, originality and reliability of future AI models that train on that increasingly AI-generated content?
