Rick Chow, a former South Carolina convenience store owner, is on trial for allegedly shooting and killing 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton. Prosecutors claim Chow chased the teen from his store in May 2023 after falsely accusing him of stealing several bottles of water from the store, then allegedly shot him in the back. The state also says Carmack-Belton was carrying a gun that night but had no intention of using it. Chow is charged with murder in connection to the teen’s death. Eyewitness Lori Carson took the stand during Rick Chow’s trial and emotionally described the moments she says she witnessed before and after 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton was shot. Carson testified that she saw Cyrus running while being chased by Chow and his son, but said she never saw anything in the teen’s hands as he ran and fell multiple times. She says she rushed to the scene after hearing Chow tell her to call 911 and helped render aid to Cyrus alongside others nearby. Christopher Horne Jr., who pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and three counts of attempted robbery in connection with Kayla Rincon-Miller’s death, is sentenced to 25 years in prison. Before being sentenced, Horne Jr. apologized to the victims and their families and accepted responsibility for his actions. Rincon-Miller was killed during a deadly robbery after a night at the movies with friends.
