Good evening… Here watching the New Bloomberg Money Show Afterhours with Scarlett Fu and Tom Keene….
Indeed we live in a city… And even country if not a world where David Gura( Good Morning …) is spending $8 on a latte, and Scarlet Fu is spending $20 at the street cart down the block from the Bloomberg building and she’s walking away without collecting change….
Price Variety…Isn’t and hasn’t this been the norm?
How is this a signal of trouble? Some drivers buy a used car for $3000 . Other a new EV for what, idk $20,000. And still there are others who spend much much more depending model, brand, and automaker…. This is how it’s been forever….
Even our smartphones which lost their individuality with all phones looking alike… But priced differently … The reverse won’t happen….All of us won’t be paying the same amount of money for the same product or features…. No matter how much inflation rises or falls …there will always be these price discrepancies…. You say potato… I say potatoes…. You pay as I did this weekend about $5.00 for a handful …about four, russet potatoes….now in the produce aisle there is a great variety of potatoes…. At different prices, with different flavors all at a different price point … When has that changed? In our discussions about affordability in this new economy should we pay attention to Scarletts $20 cup of coffee… Or Davids $8.00 latte treat?
Especially if I continue walking down the street to find more or less expensive prices … Anyway there is a lot we are not talking about…. Is Scarlett in a rush and not able to walk around, go further down for another less expensive cup …. Does she care to? Is she doing this to do her part to keep this vendor in business right there on the sidewalk in front of the Bloomberg entrance…. Where the coffee is great, the lines short, and well managed so she can get in and out in a zip….. Everything that is not even remotely on David Gura’s radar… And for a host of reasons…. That may or may not have to do with affordability …. Sometimes prices and inflation is like grapes….some seasons they are sweeter…other seasons they are not….are we going to argue it’s the blockade in the Hormuz ( or whatever) that determines its taste?
Before I had any sense or knowledge of what inflation meant I used to tell( some might say prophesy) my classmates in the third grade that ” Inflation will kill us all”
I don’t know where that came from….except to say that God planted it in my mouth to speak …
It’s why now as an older man I pay keen attention to any news on Bloomberg about inflation …
Which I don’t think will be the thing that will kill us directly ….
It’s when David Gura needs to have a cup of coffee and has no choice but to pay the uncustomary and unfamiliar higher cost of $20 to get a hit….it’s when Scarlet Fu has to go through the stress and trouble of sorting thru different brands, styles, flavors of coffee because her twenty dollar cup of coffee vendor is restricted from selling in front the bloomberg building….or worst yet a mayor is elected that bans vendors from the city in favor of store bought coffee at a location where the rent is astronomical… The choices remain.. but the prices don’t…affordability may not be a challenge but other factors exist that make it necessary to look for alternatives…especially when our search hasn’t yielded better coffee even if we aren’t paying $20 anymore….
it was never a price thing….it about quality, preference, convenience, the white glove treatment wd get from the baristas, or lack there of…..
We don’t have an affordability problem …we have a choice problem….the alternatives aren’t as good or flavorful as the brands and vendors we lean and depend on …
And that’s when we begin to raise hell….unable to call it for what it is so by default….we name it inflation …which is not true….this problem….calling it inflation is dangerous because it gives the president a whole lot of headaches trying to explain it’s not inflation….it’s our desire to buy 144 boxes of pencils….or twenty nine Barbie dolls…..but people don’t want to hear the more comprehensive answer( as we learned from Obama) we want someone or something to be done immediately about our increasing lack of choice….and so we charge at the president because he is the tallest guy in the room ….no one sees the business men….the vendors, ge mayors and the governors …who don’t protect Davids Gura’s $8.00 latte or Scarlet Fu’s preference to have her twenty dollar coffee downstairs before she comes into work…..
The president knows we are not having an inflation problem….it’s wages and salaries that isn’t keeping up with the quality of life we have and want to enjoy….problems that have existed long before he came into office …and so you can understand why he seems so flustered when trying to explain to the American people, that he’s not to blame ….that he is in fact doing the best he can to address these long standing problems….but he is only one man….with a limited term….and a press that is highly critical and antagonistic….and has been for ever since Bush’s first term….
It is these things that no one talks about or works to clarify….

Good Morning Gabriela Santos…. I don’t have children. My parents are no longer in the land of the living, I want to continue learning, travel a little, etc…. I guess you can say I don’t have the load or concerns most have going into retirement… While I am dramatically behind, i still want to press you a little as if I weren’t and ask you this: who is planning for retirement by investing in people: specifically …in securing trustworthy, reliable, faithful , hardworking, educated staff to care and support my retirement: travel companions, security detail, bouncers, cooks and chefs, people to run errands, drivers, daily planners( human) and secretaries, lawyers, aerobic instructors, fitness trainers, etc…. archival workers, custodians and home keepers, etc….. like a doctor or executive I need a staff to insure the success and longevity of ( Ret.) Me, Inc….
great start , bring in HEMA
Big day in a scary sell off and this show is mute. Too scripted. A nothing burger for the retail investor who expected more.tom has a ridiculous gut. No wonder he hides it. But, it would be nice to use his look ahead reference. I want to learn how to allocate when the market is quiet.
This show was not great. All those posts are insiders.
Great show!!!
