Zverev was never the “greatest” player never to win a slam. Marcelo Rios became world number 1, which is a greater accomplishment than winning a slam.
Zverev has more titles than Rios already, including more Masters titles, an Olympic gold medal, and two year end finals victories to none (one if you want to include Rios’ Grand Slam Cup victory). Zverev was already number 2 in the world, almost made number one, while Rios was number one for six weeks. Call me crazy, but Rios’ has not had a better career than Zverev, even if Zverev ended it right before the French Open.
Zverev only won because the field was watered down.
