The Kosovo war crimes tribunal delivers its judgement in the case of former president Hashim Thaci and several wartime commanders accused of murder and torture during the territory’s violent break from Serbia in the 1990s.

Prosecutors are seeking 45-year sentences for Thaci and three other former commanders of the ethnic Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army, which fought Serbian troops. The defendants deny all the charges.

      Hi! Human rights consultant here.

That’s not true. Resolution 1244 never declared Kosovo part of Serbia. It only described the current status at the time.

In fact, it did the opposite. 1244 was designed to stop the Kosovo War. The UN gave Kosovo the power of self-autonomy, self-determination and self-governance.

It was 1244 that laid the groundwork for Kosovo to legally declare independence in 2008.
