By the age of 13, the average child has 1,300 photos and videos of them online, posted on social networks by their parents. Social influencers regularly share details of their children’s lives with their followers, sometimes even allowing fans to ask their children questions directly. Videos of children are the most popular and sought after on the social network, so the algorithm promotes these posts.
“If you think that sharing your child’s life on social media is just an innocent act, I’m the proof that you are wrong,” says Cam, now 24. She knows the consequences only too well after her mother shared private moments from her childhood on social media. As a child, strangers would approach her in the street to ask about her period. She can no longer use her real name for fear that people will Google her and see all the intimate moments of her childhood.
In a hyperconnected world, linked by Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, everyday family life is no longer private. Parents can profit from their own children, monetizing their daily lives, struggles, and private moments. Some of these video channels could be seen as an outlet for a covert form of child labor, promoting manipulation and mistreatment of children. Videos of YouTube star ‘DaddyOFive’ ‘pranking’ his children were so shocking, they led to him losing custody of his children. Then there was the ‘cheese challenge’, which encouraged people to throw a slice of processed cheese on their baby’s face and upload a video of their reaction to social media.
We travel from Europe to the USA, via Canada and Dubai, mixing personal experiences with investigative journalism, to examine the harm caused by exposing children online.

I feel bad for that Mom of 2. When her kids het older and dont want to “cooperate” what will she do? Hope their finances are in good order cause that money WILL change when they can no longer pimp their kids out. 😢

When my daughter had just started senior school and at home she showed me a girls online profile who she knew. I was shocked by the content which had been filmed and uploaded by a parent/s. There were arranged photos of her and her younger sister a few years younger and still at junior school. For instance, individually, of each girl on their a shower cubicle and opening the door and captions about being caught, with each girl acting surprised by knowingly understanding why and it was Percy! Another I recalled each girl posses for after falling back on parents double bed wearing a tiny loose cropped top, short flared skirt with legs apart and a seductive grin. With each photo was perverse captions added coming out of their mouths. So I rang a friend who asked me for their site details and wanted to check out the content. She also had a friend who was married to a policeman who was spending his days at work looking 👀 at stuff related to children at risk. My friend decided to pass on their sits to him and on the last day before term broke up, I noticed their was authorities present. On their last day, they didn’t need to wear a school uniform as free dress. This girl shocked others by her sexual attention grabbing outfit.
On another occasion, I’d just parked up in an underground shopping mall and as I walked through this girl and her younger sister alerted my attention to tell me that a strange man had opened the door and attempted to encourage her out of the car and tried to pull her out.
The policeman knew the potential risks of posting images of children online and therefore, he made certain his children always remained anonymous. I wasn’t an avid social media person and I also didn’t post either.
I recall looking at a site once by chance of young children aged 3-6 with just their head shots which had all been submitted by hopeful parents to be a winner. There was a lot of children on the page and as a scrolled my mouse up to pull out, my mouse swiped over an extra large photo in the centre. A photo of a tiny baby laying naked on their back on a sheepskin rug. This image had been doctored, because the baby word a seductive adult knowing smile, but a large sticker placed over its private area which was highlighted when my mouse swiped over the top. I was horrified and pulled out. All the other children’s head shots were normal and had been entered the site hopeful of being a winner for child modelling. However, they were all now tarnished by the obvious sexualised image of the baby which implied illicit activities ‼️
