An interesting film. I enjoyed the olelo and the local pigeon … However, I did not unerstand the scenes on Kahoʻolawe of “haka”, which is Maori, and there was more Tahitian than Hawaiian hula…?? Important information for all: In 2001 The Hagueʻs International Court of Arbitration ruled that Hawaii has NEVER been a part of the US and remains a sovereign & neutral country as NO country can annex another sovereign country. And since the overthrow, American law has been imposed upon the population, an additional illegal act. …Yes, we all said the Pledge of Allegiance as I grew up knowing no better, as did my father before me, who, also, as a young doctor, became a Pearl Harbor survivor. I am finally studying olelo today as there was no NO Hawaiian history or language taught in the schools until the 1970s. How wonderful that today there is a resurgence, not only of olelo and cultural heritage, but the wisdom of how to Live Aloha. It will heal the world.
The Maori are polynesian, too and they all share a warrior tradition. In Hawaii, it is Lua. In Au Tearoa it is Haka.
The Ha’a was pure kanaka maoli and not Maori. I know both Kahu Lyons Naone and the men in this film. The words are from from ‘ka mamakakaua’ from Palani Vaughn. And it is not a Haka. The Hawaiian word is Ha’a. I have a full version of this Ha’a, originally created by Hale Mua o Maui.
