In this video, we explore why arctic lakes act as natural reservoirs for methane. As organic matter decomposes at the bottom of the lake throughout the winter, the resulting gas gets trapped beneath the surface ice. By creating a small opening, we can observe this process firsthand as the pressure releases the trapped gas. This demonstration highlights the role these ecosystems play in the global carbon cycle, as they release potent greenhouse gases that contribute to atmospheric warming.
