🍕ACADEMY AWARD WINNER CINEMATOGRAPHY🍕
MGM’s groundbreaking first sound picture, and the first time the company’s mascot Leo the Lion roared at the film’s start. Starring Monte Blue alongside Raquel Torres, this atmospheric drama blends silent-era artistry with emerging sound innovation. Directed by W.S. Van Dyke (with contributions by Robert J. Flaherty), the film is celebrated for its lush South Seas imagery, captured by Academy Award–winning cinematographer Clyde De Vinna, whose work earned one of the first Oscars for Cinematography.
Inspired by the 1919 nonfiction travel book by Frederick O’Brien, retaining much of that work’s anti-imperialist themes. An alcoholic doctor is set adrift by white traders after objecting to their treatment of the Polynesian workers. He washes ashore on an island where the natives, who have never seen a white man before, revere him as a god.

Set on a Polynesian Island, shot on location in Tahiti, at the time, an ambitious endeavor to shoot a Hollywood film on location among native islanders, using many of them as extras.

This certainly deserves that award for cinematography! One of the best scenes… “When you meet temptation – And the urge is very strong – Give a little whistle, give a little whistle”😙🥰. Raquel Torres! ❤ filmography list White Shadows as her first silver screen appearance. Thanks for the trip to the islands.
Another great film. 😊
Beautiful😥

I truly enjoyed this movie. That dancing guy performed a serious rap dancing there. Sadly, that is the reality that happened not only with the south pacific people but also with alaskan natives.
hi
Raquel Torres is lovely; rare for a Latina to have a chance to be the lead actress in a film, especially in that era. And the photography of “One Shot Woody” Van Dyke, is magnificent. Van Dyke shot numerous films like this in natural settings. With the explosion of sound, studios put soundtracks and sound effects to new silent films like this one. And the story of business exploitation is as true now as it was a century ago.
