Chevalier Fabien des Grieux (Barrymore) has renounced worldly pleasures to join the church. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he falls deeply in love with a young woman he meets on her way to a convent.
TRIVIA: John Barrymore met and fell in love with Dolores Costello while working together on The Sea Beast (1926.) Their on-screen chemistry translated into a real-life romance, and they were married on November 24, 1928.

He really did have a handsome profile; only saw still pictures of the ‘profile’ up close and one time saw a clip of him in later years talking and performing [mugging] the ‘profile’ on film; just watched 47 seconds of this video and had to make this comment; a damn fine handsome man—the camera loves him.

History buff here: Louisiana was not a penal colony nor even a colony of France. It was in fact considered as much France as France itself. Don’t let this fact spoil your enjoyment of this amazingly beautiful film.

And, yes, they did get hitched in real life, though not for long. Great music; Dolores is, of course, adorable and John is The Profile. And an alcoholic. Her best films were mostly silents, and before that she was (surprise!) a Ziegfeld Girl. After movies, she ran an avacedo farm. And afterward, let’s hear it for the boys in the band!
