Jupiter captures a lot of the garbage objects that are floating around the solar system, comets, meteors, and the like. Some, like the Shoemaker-Levy comet, break up and get pulled into Jupiter itself, and others get flung into farther away orbits, reducing their risk of colliding with the Earth. Of course, Jupiter’s gravity can work both ways, and send some objects into orbits that bring them closer to Earth than we are comfortable with, but if Jupiter weren’t there at all, collisions of objects with the Earth would become more likely.
