In 1950 R. A. Heinlein wrote the book Farmer In The Sky about colonizing Ganymede. Still an interesting read. The real problem with trying to colonize Ganymede is the speed our rockets can go carrying colonists. When Earth and Jupiter are closest and using gravity assists it would take 1.6 years to reach it but you wouldn’t have any fuel to slow down with once there. Even with perfect orbital positioning and enough fuel to slow down after a gravity assist or 2 you are looking at a 6 year long one way trip. Then after the initial launch you would have to wait 12 more years before you could launch a follow up colonial mission.
When we eventually get a good ion drive going, the journey will only be a few weeks.
@SKBottom We have good ion drives. The problem is they still require fuel and they are low but constant thrust. You can’t overcome the physics. The more fuel you have to bring the more fuel required to move the additional mass of the additional fuel. Plus you still need high thrust capable verniers for steering/course corrections.
That said you also have the issue of thrust nozzle degradation. Even using chemically inert fuels like helium (short supply on Earth), neon (also short supply on Earth), or argon (which is abundant on Earth the atmosphere is about 1% argon). The ions striking the thrust nozzles will degrade those nozzles requiring in flight replacements especially on long trips.
This is an impossible dream given the current stage of scientific and technological development. Moreover long years of living in a low gravitational field and strong solar and cosmic radiation environment of open interplanetary space will only be a suicidal, one way mission for humans. Unfortunately, the unforgiving nature of open interplanetary space gives us very little choice and colonizing the upper atmosphere of Venus could be a better choice in the medium term, say, within the next 100/300 years time frame, while trying to terraform the Venusian atmosphere gradually, over a time period of at least 5,000 to 10,000 years.

Quick suggestion: the visual breakdown of Ganymede’s layered interior was excellent, but including a brief comparison chart comparing its gravity, radiation, and water levels directly against Mars would make the argument even more powerful.
