Last fall Chloe Malle was tapped to succeed Anna Wintour as Head of Editorial Content for American Vogue. The daughter of actress Candice Bergen and the late filmmaker Louis Malle, she started at Vogue 15 years ago in a role known as “social editor,” overseeing a weddings‑and‑parties section that once struck her as too frothy for a serious journalist.
Now, in a time when trends are accessible on your phone at any hour of the day, Malle says that she believes people still care about Vogue. Under Malle’s leadership, the magazine’s summer issue published in June focused on celebrating the 250th birthday of the United States.
In this episode of NPR’s Newsmakers video podcast, Malle sat down with Michel Martin to discuss how the Vogue of today is different from the one she read as an adolescent, why Vogue still matters and how legacy media is evolving.

If a magazine isn’t a revenue generating enterprise it ceases to publish. Vogue magazine’s value is in its tactility, its visual excellence, and, the anticipation its readers have for what’s in the next issue. It’s going to be quite the challenge, and, quite the adventure navigating a print version into the next generation.
I appreciate and love NPR and Vogue! Great interview. Ms Malle was so great to deal with when I assisted her! Continued success and much love!!!
VOGUE lacks a clear modern POV. The magazine has now been reduced to a high gloss social media platform in print form.
My FB post…
Rarely does something that I experience have as many philosophical life intersections as this…
As most of my friends and family know, I am a fanatic lover of NPR. I mean, I listen every morning. Today, I found myself loving Michel Martin speaking about the future of American Vogue with its new Head of Editorial Content Chloe Malle. I wished that there was more of the conversation available with some art to see during the conversation. Well, NPR Newsmakers is now on YouTube. My new favorite!! I watched the extended interview, and I was able to SEE Michel Martin and the lovely suit that she picked to meet with Chloe. I was also able to watch a fascinating interview with two very thoughtful women with intersections of art, fashion, politics, journalism, feminism, and just plain joy!! I think that this is one of the most important discussions that I have seen this year.
As most of you know, legacy news media is in trouble. Newspapers are closing daily, NPR and PBS have been defunded, and even traditional big time legacy broadcast news programming is not immune. CBS just lost some BIG journalists!! With huge mergers of media giants, production of what we see and consume is going to now be in the hands of Billionaire buddies of Trump. State run news is a real possibility in the country. Our freedom of speech is being attacked on all sides. So… what does this have to do with an interview with the “New Anna Wintour”?
I love fashion. I was designing and making my own clothes when I was seven. I continued to sew my own clothes throughout high school. But fashion is more than just something we put on our bodies. Chloe said something so profound. She said that the way we dress is a form of communication. I have always said that to my clients when addressing their interior design needs. What do you want your house to say about you and, more importantly, to you? We often decorate our homes in the colors that we wear. True.
This interview is worth a watch. So important and immediate. Two thinking women just having a chit chat about fashion. No. So much more than that. It is a conversation between two journalists at the top of their game, resulting in a Cliff Notes version of EVERYTHING. Thoughtful, provocative, careful, stunning, and true. It is relevant journalism at its finest.
I have been collecting Vogue since I can remember, exactly, 1988, and I think I have most of the issues to date. Still, I used to wait for my monthly issue, and I am still subscribed to the magazine. I want to keep collecting it, but as much as I respect the changes you are making, I do not see it as giving us a way of life as it used to. I feel the profiles of the cover stories take up most of the space allotted to fashion. I want to see your take on the clothes, editorials, and fashion summaries, even if we’ve already seen them elsewhere. I want to keep collecting because it was my bible for so long. There are some new designers who are so great, and a lot of designs that you have to give life to through your pages. Why not focus on uniqueness? You are just that, so flaunt it!
Vogue is a global icon ⭐ I love how Chloe, like Anna, is factual, informed, engaged, a very smart sense of humor and all about the Fashion ❤❤
Of course she thinks your privilege affects your perspective and hurt your ego.Of course she’s tough. Of course she will challenge Vogue as an independent media —but that’s exactly what it needs. Meaningful evolution pushing the industryto catch hints , reflect, and improve. But It needs that challenge. You need harder questions and difficult conversations. I would love to work there unfortunately i’m from the countryside of the tiniest and happiest little country in centralamerica. But hey! ItDefinetly inspires and is representing the most Human craftmanship, culture and helps people create . I’m wondering how would Mrs Sozzani could have led in the time and age too!! Giddy up Chloe!! If there is someone who Can answer those question is You ! Woman you Can!!!☀️
Flip flops?
It is disappointing that First Lady Melania has never been on the cover. She is not responsible for the actions of her husband. Let’s keep politics out of beauty for a moment Vogue.
“The September issue is already looking to be so thin that you can floss your teeth with it”
