Imagine being a junior officer and talking to a decorated full bird colonel like that.
Would never happen. Tom’s character would never have made it to the trial for the Marine…he would have had his own trial to worry about. But… it’s hollyweird not reality

The implication is a reference to his prior experience. Perhaps in Vietnam given his age and the movie being set in 1992 or thereabouts.

Lawyer had it coming. Military rank and enlisted officers watch and experience things commissioned officers dont even read about.
He was correct though…the lieutenant did act a little too friendly and very informal with a superior office. Any full Colonel would have done exactly the same. No matter the branch of service.
