The trick is to be mostly honest, carefully hide unuseful ideas, and share genuine appreciation where appropriate.
The “list of greats” was genuine, but politically chosen. Having 95% honesty while keeping the not-causes-good-stuff-for-you 5% fully hidden is a powerful skill. Genuine + likable.
Clearly a classy person, who also knows how to manage perspectives. Or as my favorite acting + communications professor from school would say, “consciously manipulate people, while recognizing that the word manipulation causes people to feel repulsed. All communication is manipulation, and outside of this room, never use that word. It causing people to be repulsed makes it a poor symbol. Truth isn’t reality, perception is reality. I use the word manipulation to teach you that. Apply this notion to every symbol you choose.” Paraphrasing but it was something like that. Timothy shares the notion perfectly here.
