Tragic about Renee Adoree, but at least she has this and THE BIG PARADE as lasting monuments. In the late 1950s Tom Keene was the stage manager of a show I worked on in Hollywood. He was amazed I remembered who he was. A very nice man.

Louis B Mayer didn’t think much of either sound or color…not until he saw Al Jolson and people circling the Warner Theatre in New York to see it. Mayer had the income to retool Culver City in less than a year. 1928 and ’29 silents had full orchestral sound and the effects department added most everything else. Like several actors, Adoree’ made the transition to sound easily before she became ill.

The silent films from 1928 and 1929 really had evolved into perfection. Sometimes I wish sound would have been introduced a few years later – as we will never find out how the silents would have evolved further even more perfect if that was possible. And probably they would have.
