Fatty Arbuckle in a Serious Silent Western is the last thing one would expect, but I’m absolutely all for it! Brings to mind Jackie Gleason in his serious role in The Hustler some 40 years later. Never underestimate the acting ability of great comedians. 👍

It made me think of “Fatso” with Dom DeLuise; a great film, directed and co-starring Anne Bancroft. But not because of anything physical, more about the emotions that both Slim and Dominic have about their weight.

@l.a.gothro3999 Marty (1955) is another great film with Ernest Borginine in the lead, which reflects upon similar themes as well. Ernest won the Oscar for best lead actor for it even.
By the way, I referred to him as “Fatty” Arbuckle for the same reason I would refer to Joseph Frank Keaton as “Buster” Keaton.

Reminds me, oddly enough, of the Robert Frost poem “The Road Not Taken”. Arbuckle’s ability to play this more straight forward role might have led to more serious films both during the silent and early sound era, were it not for…

Roscoe Arbuckle at his best, before false scandal destroyed most of his career; forced to eventually work behind the camera under aliases for what most of remained of it, and still wrongly connected to it to this day. Much better actor than just in comedy; what he would have done, had he been able to continue. One of Hollywood’s first great tragedies. The film has been well-restored and preserved; so many of them weren’t and are gone forever.
