If you drive in the United States, this one is worth paying attention to. A brand new analysis of federal crash data by Priority Tire has ranked every state in America by its rate of fatal crashes per 100,000 residents, and some of the numbers are genuinely alarming. The most dangerous state in the country is Mississippi, with a fatal crash rate of 24.9 per 100,000 residents — more than twice the national average of 9.6. Wyoming comes in second at 22.1, followed by New Mexico at 19.8. South Carolina, Montana, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Alabama round out the ten most dangerous states for drivers. On the other end of the spectrum, Massachusetts recorded the lowest fatal crash rate in the entire country, making it the safest state to drive in. Researchers attribute the higher danger rates in the most dangerous states to a combination of factors — rural roads without dividers, lower seat belt compliance, higher rates of drunk driving, longer emergency response times, and fewer traffic safety resources overall. But what is perhaps most striking about this data is the sheer scale of the gap between the safest and most dangerous. Mississippi’s fatal crash rate is nearly five times that of Massachusetts.
