The Lucas Museum Just Opened in LA — 15 Years in the Making | Marina Valmont

Something extraordinary just happened in Los Angeles, and it has been a very long time coming. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the billion-dollar cultural institution co-founded by Star Wars creator George Lucas and his wife, has finally opened its doors to the public after fifteen years in the making. The building alone is worth the trip. Designed by celebrated Chinese architect Ma Yansong, it is a sweeping, organic 300,000 square foot structure that looks for all the world like a spaceship that has gently and deliberately landed in the middle of a park. It sits on a 13-acre campus in Exposition Park in South Los Angeles, and in a genuinely generous move, admission to the park grounds themselves is completely free to the public. Step inside and there are 35 galleries, two theaters, and a destination restaurant called Skywalker Grill. The collection is far broader and more ambitious than many people may be expecting. It spans everything from prehistoric cave paintings and ancient sculpture to Norman Rockwell illustrations, comic art, cinema, and the complete Lucasfilm Archives — including original Star Wars production materials, concept art and artifacts that have never before been on public display. George Lucas himself has been emphatic that this is not simply a Star Wars museum, and the breadth of the collection makes that case convincingly. In a moment that delighted everyone present, Lucas personally came out to greet the first 100 visitors on opening day Tuesday. Tickets are available now at lucasmuseum.org.
