Based on the best-selling memoir by Dr. Yvonne S. Thornton, The Ditchdigger’s Daughters (1997) tells the incredible true story of the Thornton family, led by their determined father Donald Thornton (played by the great Carl Lumbly)—a laborer who had a dream far bigger than any ditch he ever dug.
With fierce discipline, love, and unshakable belief, Donald and his wife Daisy (played by Victoria Rowell) raised their girls in New Jersey during the civil rights era with one goal: to break the cycle and rise to the top. All five daughters not only succeeded academically, but several went on to become doctors, fulfilling the dream their father once spoke aloud in faith.
Directed by Robert Ellis Miller, this Emmy-nominated TV movie is both a celebration of Black fatherhood and a powerful story about education, perseverance, and beating the odds. It’s an unsung classic that deserves a fresh audience.

The days when women could aspire to be a teacher, secretary, or airline stewardess. My daddy told me I don’t need to go to college, it would be a waste of money cause I’d just get married. Now I’m a maid, and I’m a 66 year old white woman who’s never married. These folks had amazing ambition for their children and I’m glad they succeeded. Thanks for posting this movie.

‘Maid’ is crazy and 66 is not old. My GM didn’t marry until she was about 55.
Now a days with the lay off’s it doesn’t matter.
I understand bcuz some old school ideas of a women’s duty was totally different in certain times, certain families didn’t encourage especially females to be what they wanted to be. Also some families didn’t want you to be more than your parents 😮. This is called disfuctionality!!!!😢😢

Beautifully done. Just proves how important it is to have a father in the home. Even tho he was controlling and domineering ,he just wanted better for his girls than what he had growing up. We need more dads in the homes these days. Less crime,gangs,prisoners,welfare ,and unwanted pregnancies.
These types of dads also cause trauma just wanting the best isn’t enough for the bs that comes with it..that’s the problem with blk women today and why they sit and deal with any and everything just to never actually get what we need and come last while working our asses off for ourselves
I saw this movie on television in 1999, about 6 months before my mother passed away. When I told my sister about the ending, we agreed to be part of Mama’s pallbearers whenever Mama transitioned & we helped to carry Mama front the hearse to her final resting place.
Paying a man to take ya daughter off to prom would sell her to a trafficker too
