How They Found You #23

Tesla workers shared videos from customers’ car cameras.

In 2023, Reuters interviewed nine former Tesla employees. They said that between 2019 and 2022, groups of Tesla employees privately shared, through an internal messaging system, sometimes highly invasive videos and images recorded by customers’ car cameras. One described a video of a man approaching a vehicle completely naked. Another said: “We could see inside people’s garages.” Seven former employees said the software they used at work could show the location of recordings, which potentially could reveal where a Tesla owner lived. Reuters could not obtain the videos and could not say whether the practice continues. Tesla did not respond to Reuters’ questions (Reuters, 2023).

Tesla says camera recordings are only shared with Tesla if you opt in through Data Sharing, and that they “remain anonymous and are not linked to you or your vehicle” unless there is a safety event such as a crash (Tesla Support, 2025).

One step you can do today (in the car):
1. Controls (on the touchscreen).
2. Software.
3. Data Sharing, then check every toggle.
4. Allow Cabin Camera Analytics: turn it off, and do the same for any other camera sharing toggles you don’t want.

Save this for later. So who saw your garage?
