At least one dead as Hurricane Lala slams Hawaii with violent flash flooding
Lala weakened to a tropical storm off Hawaii’s shores early Sunday morning, but forecasters still warned of flooding, mudslides and dangerous surf conditions amid continued torrential rains and high winds on the island chain. The storm battered the Big Island of Hawaii’s southern coast as a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday, before the National Weather Service downgraded it to a tropical storm. The northern edge of Lala’s eyewall brushed South Point, on the southern tip of the Big Island, with the center of the storm remaining offshore, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said.
