UPDATE: On Dec. 6, two weeks after this story published, Ahmed learned that his sister Shushu, along with her two-year-old daughter, were killed at home in an Israeli airstrike. Because of the continuing threat of bombardment, it took about a week for Ahmed’s family in Gaza to find Shushu’s body, buried under the rubble, in order to confirm her death.
In their final exchange, days before she was killed, Shushu messaged Ahmed to say her family struggled to find basic needs like food, diapers and milk and that she had grown “very very tired.”
She also promised to send him a picture of a unicorn outfit that her daughter had received as a gift.
“I always said this would be for Ahmed’s wedding,” she wrote. “I will take a picture of it tomorrow.”
News of the deadly airstrike arrived two days later.
