the Stranglers were never a “punk” band, and even Hugh would admit that, but it’s too late in the game for him to argue the point with all of these misinformed interviewers. The original Stranglers get nowhere near the recognition they should receive, but that is probably because Hugh left and dissolved that possibility…..

United Artists leapt on the stranglers more like. The stranglers had been playing their songs since 1974 and demos from 74, 75 and 76 tell you that they were there before punk and didn’t change to suit any particular audience. Hugh always denies they were punk, but it was inevitable that they were classed this way and if the punk audience liked them and this constitutes leaping on the punk thing then yes they did, but where do you stop with this kind of argument ?
