What Cartman is faking and Thomas actually has is called “coprolilia”. This is a subsection of tourettes that makes you say obscene things and make obscene and vulgar gestures involuntarily. Only about 10% of people with Tourettes have Coprolalia. It doesn’t mean everyone with tourettes does these things. Tourettes is a spectrum. Some people may have it really severely, some may have a mild version (me), but a good chunk of people diagnosed with tourettes may have it severely as a child, but mellow out as they get older (also me).

I love how much research was put into this episode and most things are very true! I loved the neurologist scene with the brain posters in the exam room. This was a lot better of an episode than i had thought it would have and having tourettes myself, i didn’t find the most of it offensive. They did great at depicting someone with coprolilia tourettes. However, it seemed that everyone that *DID* have tourettes in this episode were making obscene gestures and cursing. Only 10% of the population that have tourettes have coprolilia, so i wish they showed more representation for the vast majority of people that don’t do those things. This is how people generalize us and think that’s how tourettes works when it’s not like that for the 90% of us.

@teflonalchemist9558 Thanks so much, Teflon! I’m happy to spread awareness and give facts for a disorder that i have to live with everyday. I hope the stigma against tourettes dies down soon <3

Breanna Bunny Thank you for writing this!! I have severe tourettes, but many people (including some of my “friends” and people I know quite well) don’t really believe I have it because I don’t curse all the time, and that I try my best to not do them at school. They think it’s “not possible” to resist doing the tics, because they don’t really know what Tourettes is. They say “Well if you can resist doing them, why don’t you just resist all the time?” And then when I tell them “a because it’s much more exhausting to not do them. It’s like itching, just times 10”, they answer “How can it be exhausting to NOT do something?” Yes…. that’s the level of knowledge they have about Tourettes. They online see YouTube clips of people swearing 24/7, so that must be the only Tourettes. It’s really annoying because they act like they know so much and just a single google search can prove them wrong…
