BLACKTREE MEDIA 4TH OF JULY SHOWCASE: SOME CALL IT LOVING / SLEEPING BEAUTY (1973) 💤🎬

BlackTree Media presents Some Call It Loving, the rarely seen 1973 dreamlike drama also known as Sleeping Beauty.

Written, produced, and directed by James B. Harris, the film stars Zalman King, Carol White, Tisa Farrow, and an early-career Richard Pryor in a surreal, jazz-inflected story about fantasy, desire, loneliness, and obsession.

Before becoming one of the most important comedians and screen performers of all time, Richard Pryor appeared here in a mysterious supporting role that adds humor, danger, and strange energy to one of the most unusual films of the 1970s.

📖 MOVIE SYNOPSIS

A wealthy jazz musician named Robert Troy attends a carnival sideshow and becomes fascinated by a woman known as Sleeping Beauty, who has been asleep for years as part of a bizarre attraction.

Robert purchases her from the carnival and brings her back to his mansion, hoping to awaken her and fold her into the fantasy world he has built around himself.

When Sleeping Beauty finally awakens, she enters a strange household filled with role-playing, emotional distance, and people performing versions of love rather than truly experiencing it.

As fantasy and reality begin to blur, the film becomes a haunting meditation on loneliness, control, desire, and the danger of turning another person into an object of imagination.

🎭 KEY CAST

• Zalman King as Robert Troy, a wealthy jazz musician drawn into a fantasy he cannot control.

• Carol White as Scarlett, one of the women inside Robert’s emotionally complicated household.

• Tisa Farrow as Jennifer, the mysterious Sleeping Beauty.

• Richard Pryor as Jeff, an early dramatic and comic presence in the film.

Richard Pryor’s appearance makes the film especially fascinating for fans interested in his pre-superstar years, before Silver Streak, Blue Collar, The Wiz, Stir Crazy, and his legendary stand-up concert films.

James B. Harris had previously worked as a producer with Stanley Kubrick on films including The Killing, Paths of Glory, and Lolita. With Some Call It Loving, he created a strange, atmospheric, adult fairy tale that feels closer to an art-house dream than a conventional Hollywood drama.

🎥 FILM NOTES

Some Call It Loving is not a traditional fairy-tale adaptation. Instead, it uses the idea of Sleeping Beauty to explore fantasy, possession, emotional isolation, and the performance of intimacy.

The film has developed a cult reputation because of its unusual tone, haunting imagery, jazz atmosphere, and cast of performers who would later become recognizable figures in film and television.

For Richard Pryor fans, it offers a rare glimpse of him during a transitional period, before Hollywood fully understood how to use his genius on screen.

🌟 WHY THIS FILM MATTERS

Some Call It Loving matters because it captures a strange moment in 1970s independent cinema when filmmakers were willing to experiment with sexuality, fantasy, psychology, and myth in deeply unconventional ways.

Richard Pryor’s presence adds another layer of discovery. Even in a supporting role, his timing, intensity, and unpredictability remind us that he was never just a comedian — he was a complete performer with dramatic instincts, danger, vulnerability, and truth.

BlackTree Media is proud to showcase rare films, forgotten performances, and hidden chapters in the careers of legendary Black artists.
