Weekend Feature: Shoot to Kill (1988) — Sidney Poitier in a Smart, Gritty Thriller

BlackTree Media presents Shoot to Kill, a sharp, suspense-driven thriller starring Sidney Poitier alongside Tom Berenger and Kirstie Alley.

Released during Poitier’s late-career action-thriller run, Shoot to Kill stands out for its intelligence, tension, and character-driven suspense — placing a legendary actor into a modern, high-stakes crime story without sacrificing depth.

⭐ Plot

When a dangerous killer flees into the rugged Pacific Northwest, FBI agent Warren Stantin (Sidney Poitier) teams up with local lawman Jonathan Knox (Tom Berenger) to track him through unforgiving wilderness terrain.

As the manhunt intensifies, secrets emerge, alliances are tested, and survival becomes just as critical as justice. The film blends urban crime drama with survival thriller elements, building tension through isolation, mistrust, and moral resolve.

⭐ Starring

Sidney Poitier (In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner)

Kirstie Alley

🎬 Directed by

Roger Spottiswoode

When he yells out Sarah at the riverside, can see a vehicle driving at the wide cut. About 1.03. Good movie. Good actors, all.

Gave up after 40 minutes. Adverts literally every 5 minutes. Totally spoils the flow of the movie. Most ads I’ve ever seen in a single film.

This is brilliant. Although, may I say it looks like two movies back to back. You’ll know what I mean if you watch it.

    Better than I expected.

I’m a big Clancy Brown fan, and I’ve always seen references about Sidney Poitier in things like South Park and other shows. So after this, I’m keen to see more.
