Tipping culture may have just hit its most viral moment yet. A couple ordering at a Shake Shack kiosk at Salt Lake City International Airport decided to test a theory — that Shake Shack charges you more if you do not tip. They ordered three milkshakes at $5.99 each, selected no tip, and what happened next is exactly what they suspected. The screen immediately flashed a message reading “Uh Oh! There has been a pricing update”, and every single item on their order went up by 50 cents, adding $1.50 to their total. They posted the video to TikTok and millions of people watched it. Shake Shack has since responded, insisting it was a technology glitch and not company policy. The timing of that glitch, appearing in the exact moment a customer declined to tip, has convinced virtually nobody. And the story has reignited what is arguably the biggest frustration in dining right now. A new survey found that 78 percent of Americans say they are experiencing tipping fatigue, 42 percent are actively tipping less than they ever have before, and 22 percent say they will not tip at fast food chains at all. So we want to know — are you personally experiencing tipping fatigue? And does a kiosk that appears to guilt-trip you into tipping change how you feel about a brand entirely?
