Robots Just Beat Usain Bolt’s World Record at China’s Robot Olympics! Isabella Rossini

China just held the most mind-bending sporting event on the planet. The 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games are currently underway in Beijing, and the scale of what is happening there is genuinely staggering. Two thousand and fifty-six robots representing 666 teams from 26 countries are competing across 51 separate events, including football, table tennis, dance, firefighting simulations, and household chores. Think of it as the Olympics, but for machines. And just like the Olympics, world records are being broken. Two robots have already surpassed Usain Bolt’s legendary 9.58-second 100-metre world record — one clocking in at 9.39 seconds and another at 9.47 seconds. To fully appreciate how extraordinary that is, consider that last year’s winning robot ran the same distance in 21.50 seconds. In just twelve months, the winning time has been more than halved. Every sprint event is now being run fully autonomously, with absolutely no human input whatsoever. China is very deliberately using these games to show the world exactly where it sees the future of robotics heading — and right now, no other country is keeping pace.
