In May 1970, Sergeant Reid Mendenhall served as a sniper team member with Echo Company, 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, during operations in Cambodia under the 1st Cavalry Division. On May 15, an O‑1 Bird Dog observation aircraft was shot down by enemy fire near Fire Support Base Brown, killing Lt. Peter Kellogg and SP4 Kenneth Smith. The next day, Sniper Team B located the wreckage deep in the jungle, recovered the remains of the two airmen, and retrieved the aircraft logbook. It was one mission among many during the Cambodian campaign, but for those on the ground, it meant ensuring two fallen Americans were not left behind. 🇺🇸
