Hard to think this was 2 years ago, Gals! I love the continuity in Stolen Earth/Journey’s End, with Davros recognising Sarah Jane from this very story. Beautiful bit of serendipity there, with Sarah Jane’s return to WHO becoming more than just the 1 episode. We miss you, Liz.
(Not sure why Liz’s death has had such a big impact on fandom. Yes, Sarah Jane was quite popular, but – there were plenty of other popular companions who have sadly passed. (Jaqueline Hill/Barbara as one of the early ones…) I know she was filming SJA at the time, but still, not every companion received their own 15 minute biography/farewell on their passing… There is just something about her, and whilst we only really recognise a very small part of her entire life here as WHO fans, it’s such a HUGE part to us.)
Tom Baker will always be Dr Who to me as a Gen Xer.
I just finished watching all of Classic Dr Who for the 1st time and can say that Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton and Sylvester McCoy are my favourite Dr’s and also Genesis of The Daleks and the E-Space trilogy are my absolute favourite episodes. I also think the Peter Davison era is underrated.
Sarah adopting Luke in the future because she couldn’t have children, traces back to the radiation poisoning she suffered while loading that rocket…
Tom Baker. MY first Doctor❤❤…
This era is *MY* true dawn of “Doctor Who” fandom.
My first “Doctor Who” memory is from the early Pertwee era, late in 1970, with the Silurians.
My first memory of being *confused* by Doctor Who is from “The Three Doctors”, in early 1972.
My first memory of being worried I might not get back in front of a television in time to watch “Doctor Who” is from early 1974: “The Monster of Peladon”.
But the real turning point was when I was given a (audio-only) open-reel tape recorder for Christmas, 1974.
Over that Christmas holiday week, I recorded – and then played back again and again until I drove my parents spare! – the soundtracks from:
– 2 (repeated) eps of Star Trek,
– 1 ep of “Bugs Bunny” (parts of which I can still quote to this day!)
– Part of an ep of “the Six Million Dollar Man”
– … And most significantly, on my last remaining (and smallest!) reel of tape, the first 10 minutes of Tom Baker’s first “Doctor Who” story, “Robot”, Part 4.
Over the week of repeated listening to all those tapes that followed, my decision became clear: Everything else I’d recorded could either in live on within my own memory… or get get lost. “Doctor Who” was the only thing that mattered!
That Saturday, I started recording “The Ark In Space” over whatever had been on that reel of tape before. I got all 4 eps on the one reel, and listened to them again and again…
I did the same with “The Sontaran Experiment”.
By the time “Genesis of the Daleks” ep 1 aired, I was starting to run out of tape, even though I was re-using the tapes I didn’t mind erasing. The first ep went onto one (less-than-ideal) reel I already owned; The 2nd ep went onto a reel I’d “temporarily” borrowed from my Dad (It remained in my collection for several years!), but which was a special high-quality formulation that really required a much higher bias current than my very basic 2nd-hand recorder could deliver. Result: For me, the 2nd ep of “Genesis of the Daleks” is not complete unless it features, in the muffled background, the half-speed eerie warblings of various opera singers and their well-deserved (but very unnatural/supernatural-sounding!) applause. =:o}
1975 was the year became a full-on “Doctor Who” fan. So although Jon Pertwee was my “first” Doctor, Tom Baker was *MY* Doctor!
I remember that came out in 1974 Tom Baker was the fourth doctor yeah when he met defrost I was 9 years old then I was living in Providence Rhode Island at 421 orms Street back in 1974
