The Taiwan conflict has brought the Philippines back onto the global political stage. Will the island state under Ferdinand Marcos Jr. become the new geopolitical demarcation line in the showdown between China and the US? Tensions in the South Pacific are bringing the Philippines back onto the big geopolitical stage.
Elected to office in May 2022, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the president has distanced himself from his predecessor Duterte’s China-friendly policies and signed an extended defence agreement with the US. The US has thus secured access to military bases in the Philippines and changed the map in the region. If the country entered into a war with China over Taiwan, the Philippines would become a frontline state due to its proximity to Taiwan, its strategic location in the South China Sea and its historical military partnership with the US. The fact that the island state is driven by major internal political tensions makes the situation even more fragile. The stress test the Philippines will have to pass in the coming months may also have global repercussions.
Filmmaker Carsten Stormer, who has lived in the Philippines for many years, follows developments in the country and examines its geopolitical role in these turbulent times until the US’s largest military exercise in the Philippines in May 2024. What do China and the US hope to achieve and which of the two superpowers will ultimately assert itself in this geopolitical struggle for the West Philippine Sea with its vital trade routes for Europe?

It can’t be helped. We’re very much in a very strategic geopolitical placement. Aside from being the gateway going to different ASEAN countries and into the Indian Ocean countries, we are possibly sitting on oil or gas reserves. That’s why china preventing us to dig even within our own territory.
I’m pure filipino blood and i want to give an statement very clear for you that the philippines only care and 100% Focus for an about 250,000 OFW in Taiwan and don’t have an intention to protect the Taiwan👍👍👍👍
The video so minimized the Philippine aspiration to improve its military strength to just a side event in geopolitical power rivalry between USA and China. But that is not the basic reason for such aspiration. The Chinese aggression is the impetus for such military build up in the Philippinnes. The video has trivialize and minimized the Philippine perspective.
No, it’s the Chinese 9+ thus lines claims causing these problems.
dont care, leave us alone. We dont want war
China has to remember that in the 1950’s war in Korea, that China have not advanced since the joint Philippine contingency with the UN and the US. A few hundred Filipino military seized their advancement when China supported north korea. I know that PLA got a little bit modern now but has never proven their strength, whereas the Philippines have certainly proven their worth during war. Cagayan Governor is just one of those political factions that says they are Pro-Philippines but does not contradict China’s aggression towards the Philippines sovereignty and he also don’t support the Philippines’ steps to expand its capability to strengthen our deterrence towards any nation’s aggression. He and the rest of the Philippines has to accept the fact that we are a small country and should there be a war must rely on Mutual defense treaties and military support of other alliances.
CHINA is the menac e of the Philippine seas and territories Filipinos be mindful cooperate to act as one against the enc roaching of China in our territories an d want the Phil to be its puppet count ry. Think Filipino fir st dont allow evil communist to domi nate our democrati c country. Choose do you Filipinos wamt to be controll ed by the communi st. Choose pro Filipi no and Philippines leadership
