This means that these are NOT our personal choices, favorites, or picks! MTV chose and ranked these videos, we didn’t. We’re just showing you their list and reminiscing about these classic videos and songs! 🙂
You’ll find great artists from WHITNEY HOUSTON to MICHAEL JACKSON, WHITESNAKE to BON JOVI, PETER GABRIEL to STEVE WINWOOD and many more artists that were staples of Eighties rock & pop radio!
While this video features so many hits from that time period, needless to say there are still many other great ones that didn’t make the list here. Do you remember these songs? Which one is your favorite? Which videos from the 1980’s do you think should’ve been included in their top 20? Comment below!

*”Jump” was muted by YT, sorry about that.
1. This is NOT a list of personal picks or songs we consider our personal favorites. This is video shows the list that MTV created for their “TOP VIDEOS OF THE 1980’s” episode that they broadcast on November 24th, 1989. And bear in mind this was aired on the U.S. version of the MTV network, so there’s going to be significant differences from what was popular in the U.S. versus in the U.K., Europe, and other territories. The entire list of videos can be found on IMDB and verified here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls022380614/
2. It goes without saying that many of us (myself included) will disagree with how MTV ranked some of these videos, and there’s certainly some great ones that they left off the list entirely! I don’t know the exact process by which MTV chose and ranked these videos, and I’m definitely not saying I think this list is definitive. I’m just sharing what MTV picked. Let us know which videos you think they should’ve included on their list!
3. This is not an AI channel, this video was created by actual GEN-X’ers who grew up loving this music and wanting to share our love and memories of these songs and videos with you! We’d love to know what songs you remember the most? What other songs and videos from that era do you remember fondly? Did you listen to these when they first came out? Leave a comment and let us know, and thanks for watching!
It was way too heavily weighted towards the back end of the 80s. For sure most of these are not the videos that put MTV on the map.
No Culture Club. Don’t come around here no more, Iconic song and video. One – Metallica. Hold me Now – Thompson Twins. Spandau Ballet. Whip it from Devo. Edge of 17 – Stevie Nicks. Centerfield – John Fogerty. Touch of gray – Grateful Dead. I could literally go one forever before I would’ve voted for most of these. They put more emphasis on the back end of the 80s, probably as a result of this being compiled in 89.
❤fggggg
The top 2 are spot on.. a lot of songs a lot of memories Sweet dreams by the Eurtymics deserves an Honorable mention I think but can can really argue? I agree with the top 2 lol
You’re videos are great bro. I’m not gonna bust your balls anymore. Keep it up man… I hope you’re a dude, even if not, otherwise still keep it up. They’re fun to watch.❤ sorry I fucked with you the first time I seen your videos, but I like what you’re doing! 🫵🤘
I e always thought How Will I Know was a far better song than I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
Even if you don’t like some of these songs, you have to admit, these are all better than anything these days. How do we know? They are all 40 years old & still relevant.
Really not 1 prince song
Yeah MTV really blew it with that one, I think the highest they ranked Prince in that decade round-up was in the mid-40s or something. That’s part of why I started making the viewer voted/suggested lists lately because they’re far more accurate of what people really loved and considered iconic compared to MTV’s own “official” list.
Cyndi Lauper should’ve had 2 or 3 entries. Girls, She Bop, Goonies
So, what about the Eurythmics, Billy Idol, Culture Club?
Money for Nothing, Dancing in the Dark and Born in the USA did not belong in this top 40, Top 200, sure.
Not one song by Journey? No way this list is legit!
Mr. Robert Palmer; Bon Jovi; Mr. Steve Winwood; ZZ Top; *** U2 Pride (In the Name of Love); Mr. Michael Hutchence; Mr. George Michael; Mr. Michael Jackson; Madonna; Ms. Whitney Houston; Mr. John Mellencamp; Heart; Def Leppard; all super artists.
I agree and like with 27 of the 40 songs
