I honestly think that they didn’t think that Mitch would move on as quickly in free agency as he did. Dolan’s pronouncement on the 2nd apron was the monkey wrench. The front office, in my opinion, either made some promises or had an understanding with Mitch that Dolan purposely blew up! If they knew that was coming, I don’t think that they would’ve waived the rights to Hukporti.
As far as McBride goes, his next contract is going to be significant. The Knicks, as currently constructed, are not going to be able to afford him and still stay under the 2nd cap. Logic says trade him as an expiring contract. That’s why his value is so high right now.
This is another MR situation. If they feel that they need him to win another championship next season, they’ll let him play out and deal with the consequences. Dolan’s has given both sides (the front office & McBride) the blueprint.
The current CBA runs through the 2029-30 season. IMHO, it is a flawed document that makes it almost impossible for teams to retain their own players. It also makes it extremely difficult for veterans to stick around unless they take huge pay cuts. Think about it……. It’s quite possible that Landry Shamet was one retirement announcement away from being out of the league!
